Grumari is a rough, beautiful and very long beach (2,5 kilometers) next to Prainha . The name means "stones that make water" in tupi - indigenous language of the Brazilian Indians. Great beach for surfers as there are usually bigger waves and stronger currents. The beach is surrounded by a marvellous nature and is really a relaxing place where you can spend a day sunbathing and swimming without staying in the crowd and without meeting too many tourists. It is a relatively secluded beach and much quieter and cleaner than Rio's more famous beaches. Nearby there are also some small restaurants that offer good food. The best way to reach it is by car, from Copacabana it will take you about one hour, but it depends on the traffic. By car you go all the way from Leblon, São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca to Grumari, passing through Prainha. The beach can also be reached by the orange "surf bus" that passes through Copacabana and Ipanema.
