Neighborhood Description

Botafogo is a middle class bayside neighbourhood extending inland from the beach area and between Copacabana and Ipanema in one direction and downtown in the other. Botafogo is much closer to touristic sights like Cristo Redentor, Pão de Açúcar and Santa Teresa than beach neighbourhoods like Copacabana, Leme, Ipanema and Leblon which face the Atlantic Ocean.

The neighborhood has no real beach life but makes up for its murkiness with breathtaking views of sea, sky, and Sugarloaf Mountain. Botafogo is a center of cultural activities, with a high concentration of fancy cafés, restaurants, museums and several movie theaters that feature arthouse films. Popular attractions include the Home of Ruy Barbosa, the Museu do Índio, which explores the culture and history of the major indigenous peoples of Brazil, the Villa-Lobos Museum and Casa Daros, housing a magnificent collection of contemporary latin-american art, located in a beautiful restored  neoclassic building from the 19th century. It is also home to two of the city's largest shopping centers, Botafogo Praia Shopping and Rio Sul. The neighborhood is pretty safe and served by one metro station and dozens of buses that go 24/7 to anywhere in Rio.
